Gee's Bend Pattern Collage

The residents of Gee's Bend in Alabama have been making unique quilts for generations!  These quilts are characterized by their use of  rectangle and square shapes of various sizes.  For this project, first graders reviewed horizontal and vertical shapes as well as using patterns in art.

We began by using markers to create some creative patterns.

A pattern is something that repeats!

You can make a pattern with lines, shapes, colors... even numbers!

Beautiful!

We cut our patterns into pieces and glued them onto a brown background paper.

Pieces could only be glued on horizontally and vertically.

We kept cutting and gluing until the whole page was filled with colorful rectangles.
