End of the Line

Our line activities are coming to an end... however we will continue to use line in other projects as well!  Now that we have spent time focusing on different ways to use line, students will have the knowledge and skills to use it successfully in other art activities throughout the year.  Soon we will begin learning about a NEW art element... stay tuned!

Kindergarten made super fun line hats!
First we used markers to make a few fancy line decorations...

Then we learned to fold, twist and glue paper in order to add some 3-D lines to our hats.

Tah-dah!  Finished product.

We looked great in our line hats!

First graders looked at art by Keith Haring.  We loved his bright colors, and simple lines and shapes.  We practiced drawing stick figures in Haring's style.

We took turns modeling for each other.  We studied the models carefully and drew a stick figure in the same pose.

After we drew our figures, we outlined them several times.  We filled each space with different line designs.

Students included zig-zag, curved, straight, dotted, dashed, thick and thin lines.

Beautiful!

First grade students hard at work.

Second grade students added a city to the bottom of their Starry Night paintings.  We cut the city from black paper, and added lots of windows!

Third grade studied Art Nouveau artist, Gustav Klimt.  He used lots of lines and patterns in his art.  Click here to see our inspiration.

Students drew a large quilt and a couple sleepy portraits.  We then painted the quilt with watercolor.  Next, we will add some detailed line designs.

Fourth grade is studying Jackson Pollock.  We painted with string to recreate his splattery, drippy style.

These lines were fun to make.  The string has a mind of its own!  Click the video below to see 4th grade artists in action!

Fifth graders are creating blind contour line drawings.  This means that the artist does not look at his drawing until it is finished!  This technique felt funny at first... but soon we were having a lot of fun because our drawings turned out so INTERESTING!  This blind contour drawing was created while looking at a picture of superman.

Charlie Brown!

Blind contour drawing was a great way to remind students that art does not always need to be perfect.

Art Update: Line Exploration!

Our first art projects are looking pretty great.  We are nearing completion on several line-focused activities.  Below are some of our artworks in progress.  It is fun to see all of the different ways we can use this art element!
Kindergarten got some cutting and gluing practice with this Piet Mondrian project.  We practiced cutting straight, black lines, and glued them on our paper vertically and horizontally...and in some cases diagonally as well!

After the glue dried, we painted some of the space between the lines with red, yellow, and blue tempera paint.

What a great time for little fingers to practice brush control!

1st grade made 3-dimensional art with lines!
After learning several paper bending/folding/twisting/gluing techniques, students used their problem solving skills to create beautiful, sturdy paper sculptures.

Wow!  3-D lines are fun.

2nd grade is looking at Starry Night, by Vincent van Gogh.  After carefully studying the painting, they drew their own swirling sky with oil pastel.  We used lines of all kinds to create our art.

After the oil pastel was finished, we painted over our lines with watercolor.  The oil pastel lines resist the watercolor paint like magic!

3rd grade Paul Klee landscapes, finished.

Close-Up.  We created the textured areas by adding salt to our wet watercolor paint.

4th grade is working hard to finish their Bad Hair Day project.  Soon they will be on display at English Landing!!

Close-up.  Cool lines!!

5th grade is finishing up their Take a Line For a Walk projects.

After the lines are finished, students drew shapes and colored them in with colored pencil.  Beautiful!

Art at the Library

English Landing has partnered with the Mid-Continent Public Library in Riverside to display student artwork.  Right now, Mrs. Demint's 3rd grade students have their landscapes on display.  They are lovely!  Here is a sneak peek:

Don't forget to check out the art while you are checking out your favorite book!

New artwork coming soon!

Lookin' at LINE

To start off the year, English Landing students are studying the art element of LINE.  Lines may seem simple at first, but after a lot of studying and experimenting, we are discovering just how interesting and complex this lovely element can be.  Take a look below to see some photos of our line adventures.

Kindergartners practice making lines of all kinds with marker.

Kindergarten practice.

More practice... beautiful!

After practicing, Kindergarten made various lines with oil pastel.  We then painted over our lines with watercolor.  Learning to paint is fun!

1st grade created a lot of different lines with crayon.  We then painted the spaces between our lines with watercolor.

2nd grade went 3-dimensional with their lines!  We practiced our cutting, gluing, and problem solving skills while creating these line designs.

Nice lines, 2nd grade!

2nd grade completed work.

3rd grade learned about artist, Paul Klee.  After looking at his work for inspiration, students created a landscape line drawing.  We darkened our lines with black acrylic paint.  We used a piece of stiff mat board to add the paint instead of a brush.

Another 3rd grade landscape.  The mat board creates such interesting lines!

4th grade Bad Hair Day project.  We are learning how to use lines in contrasting patterns and textures.  We even got to squeeze in a portrait lesson for this project!

5th grade is "taking a line for a walk".  Building up our lines makes such interesting designs.
