Art Activities Update

Our shape projects are going great! We have been learning so many great art skills, techniques, and tricks. I am so proud of our students' progress. We can draw shapes. We can cut shapes. We can makes shapes look far away, or close. We can create 3-dimensional paper shapes. We can even make shapes look 3-dimensional on a flat piece of paper. Take a look below to see why this art teacher is busting with pride.
Kindergartners are making a pumpkin patch collage from shapes.  They used torn green paper for the grass...

and cut out other shapes to create a truck and a wagon full of pumpkins.

This project was great for scissor and glue practice, and well as problem solving and decision making skills.

After we glued our shapes, we used crayons to add details.

1st grade is working on a pumpkin patch picture using oil pastels.  We used BIG shapes in the foreground, and SMALL shapes in the background.  This creates the illusion of space in our picture.

2nd grade used their knowledge of organic shapes to make a collage with tissue paper.  After gluing the pieces to a background, we used metallic markers to add details.

3rd graders are practicing their oil pastel skills to get ready for their next project.

This practice activity focuses on blending colors together.

This activity allows us to be well prepared for our project.

4th grade is working on a still life project.  We are studying apples closely in order to draw them realistically.

We are making several apple drawings using different mediums...

such as ebony pencil...

and charcoal!

5th graders are practicing shading techniques.  By adding shadows and highlights to 2-dimensional shapes, we can make them look 3-D.

Great job 5th grade!  This is a tricky skill.

Working with Shape

We are well into our shape activities here at English Landing.   Take a look at what we are making!

Kindergarten is focusing on circles.  We read the book "The Dot", and looked at art by Wassily Kandinsky for inspiration.

We used oil pastels to create our circle art.

1st grade learned all about pumpkins.  After reading a book about a pumpkin patch, we looked closely at pumpkin shapes in order to draw them realistically.

Notice the shadows and highlights!

Wow!!

2nd grade is studying organic shapes (shapes from nature).

We went outside to study leaf shapes.

We made sketches of the leaves we were studying.

Working hard!

Nice organic shapes!

These sketches will come in handy for our next art project.

3rd grade is learning about symmetrical shapes.

After studying symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes, we made a symmetrical art project.

This project gave us some good scissor and glue practice, too.  Look at those beautiful and intricate shapes!

4th grade finished up their Henri Matisse collages.  We used geometric, free-form, and organic shapes in our art.

5th grade is focusing on 3-dimensional forms.  After discussing the differences between shape and form, students created
3-D forms out of paper.

We made shapes such as a cube, rectangular prism, triangular prism, and triangular based pyramid.

They were tricky at first, but now we are really good at making them!

Indroducing Shape

Artists at English Landing are learning about a new art element this week... SHAPE!  There is so much to cover when exploring shape.  Kindergartners are working on identifying basic shapes and using them creatively in art.  1st and 2nd grade have been focusing on the geometric shape family, and 4th grade is experimenting with free-form and organic shapes.  Below are some of our new shape creations, as well as some lovely line projects that are finally finished up!  Check back very soon to see more about SHAPE.

After reading The Shape of Things, by Dayle Ann Dodds, Kindergartners each cut a shape out of paper, and turned it into a creative picture.  Ms. May asked each artist what the picture was and wrote the title in the corner.  This triangle turned into a boat!

"Me in the mountains"

"Firework"

"Tower"
1st graders learned about the Geometric shape family (square, triangle, circle, etc.  Shapes that relate to geometry)  Using only geometric shapes, they created a robot collage!

Finished robot... or should we say Geo-bot!?

2nd graders are also reviewing the Geometric shape family.  They created a cityscape on black paper using only geometric shapes, and traced over the shapes with glue.

When the glue dried, we used chalk pastels to add color to the shapes.  Pastels are great for blending colors!

Busy (and messy) fingers :)

Beautiful!

3rd grade is finishing their Gustav Klimt projects.  After painting them, we used markers to add line designs.

4th graders are working on a new collage project inspired by Henri Matisse.  This artist loved bright colors!

To begin, we created paintings that we later cut up to use in our collage...

..like this!!

Next, we will add free-form and organic shapes on top.

5th grade took the art element of line to the third dimension when creating these wire sculptures.  Working with wire is like drawing in the air!

5th graders were able to "purchase" extra supplies for their sculptures.  They earned  art dollars by being focused on their work!
Our sculptures are awesome!  This one is a boxer.
