Message from Miss Lieb :)

Hello English Landing Eagles!

I am so thankful that I've been able to student teach in such an amazing school and art classroom!  My graduation is Friday so this is my last week here!  It has been a pleasure being here and I'll miss it very much.


*AWESOME ART NEWS UPDATE*

Kindergarten

After their house of shapes creation, Kindergarten students explored patterns in art.

They created their own shapes...
 

and cut them out!

They traced their shapes to fill their whole page...

and filled their shapes in with patterns using crayons.

 

 

First Grade

After sketching out their self-portrait, "When I Grow Up", pictures, first graders used sharpie to outline their picture and colored them in with crayon.

 



 Students filled their entire white page full of details and color.

They are going to be extremely successful!

 

 

Second Grade

 

After learning about Wassily Kandinsky,second graders folded a square piece of paper into four smaller squares.  They used oil pastels to add solid/blended color to make the project more bold and lively!

 

Third Grade

Third grade is just completely finishing their Pablo Picasso art projects since they put on an incredible musical show last week and missed some art time.

Fourth Grade

Fourth grade finished their Tar Beach projects and have been working on experimental paint mixing/blending skills. 

 

They have been practicing these techniques on this paper before they start a new project!

Fifth Grade

 

Fifth grade has been continuing their Andy Warhol portrait, Pop Art project.  They played a game that reviewed color schemes called "Who Wants to be a Color Extraordinaire?".  I created this game based off of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?".  Fifth grade worked together to win!

 

Fifth grade is one work day away from finishing this fabulous project.

 

 

All across the board...there are awesome things happening in art!

Art Activities Update

 Miss Lieb has been teaching some awesome lessons at English Landing!  Below you will find some beautiful and expressive art made by our elementary students.  Check back soon for a guest post by Miss Lieb!!



Kindergarten paintings were transformed into awesome owl collages!

Our experimental painting activity made for some colorful owl creations!

This activity gave students some extra cutting and gluing practice as well.

After finishing our owls, students got a chance to play with some 3-D shapes! 

We used these shapes to make houses, buildings and towers.

It was fun!

After practice with the blocks, we drew our shape buildings with marker....

...and colored them in with crayon.

First grade is creating self-portraits.  These portraits are special because they depict what the student wants to be when he or she grows up!  This student wants to be a teacher.



 

Students brainstormed with neighbors in order to get a lot of ideas for details within the portraits.

 

 

 

3rd grade is learning about Pablo Picasso.  After reading the book, Getting to Know Picasso, students sketched ideas for an abstract portrait in their sketchbooks. 

We chose our favorite sketch, and enlarged it on white paper.  We then painted the portraits with tempera paint and oil pastels.

4th graders have finished their Tar Beach projects.  Since Faith Ringgold liked to use art to communicate, each artwork tells a special story about the student who made it.  We also created a "quilt" border, just like Faith Ringgold!

5th grade is learning about Andy Warhol and Pop Art.  We will be creating self portraits in Warhol's bright and colorful style.  

5th grade is also studying the color wheel and color schemes.  This information will come be useful when we begin coloring our portraits.

Art Activities Update



 

The art room has been a fun and messy place these last couple of weeks.  Students have been using a huge variety of media, and are getting some good practice with some new art materials.  Take a look below to see what we have been creating as we continue to explore the art elements of shape, form, value, color, and space.

 

 



Kindergarten got some painting practice as they complete an experimental color mixing activity.

Blue and yellow make... GREEN!

We filled our entire papers with mixed colors.  BUT we tried not to make brown by mixing too many colors.

1st grade reviewed primary and secondary colors with this beautiful cityscape activity.

After reading the book Painting the Town by Denise Minnerly, students drew their own towns, and painted them with tempera paint.

Students received only primary colors (red, yellow and blue) and had to mix them to create new colors.

Finally, black paint was used to create outlines and windows.

2nd grade learned about Grant Wood.  He loved to paint landscapes!

We drew our landscapes with pencil...

and colored them with oil pastels and tempera cake paint.

3rd graders finished their harvest moon projects.  This project focused on showing space or depth in an artwork. 

By changing the size of our shapes, we can make things appear to be close or far away. 

Objects in the foreground are big, and objects in the background are small.

4th grade finished their apple still life drawings.  We used shading to show shadows and highlights.  We used all types of media!  This apple was done using ebony pencil...

and sharpie marker (stippling).

5th grade used the 3-D shapes they created to set up still lifes.  Look at those great shadows!!

We drew the still lifes carefully.  We focused on drawing the shapes in perspective, and creating shadows and highlights.  Ms. May is proud of their hard work!
